Meet Tano, the girl I picked up yesterday.
Picture 1: Severe dehydration and stuck shed.
Picture 2: Several layers of stuck shed and eye caps have left her blind for god knows how long.
Picture 3: Chew/burn marks on the back of her head.
Picture 4: High possibility of being permanently blind in both eyes. Puncture wounds in right eye cap, shrinkage due to lack of humidity in both eye caps.
Picture 5: Incredibly dry skin, even after two hours of soaking, several rub-downs of Shed-Aid, and super high humidity for (so far) 24 hours. Dozens of missing scales. Bite scars and scratches from live feeder rats.
Picture 6: And lastly, a dent in her back. I’m guessing she was either dropped or stepped on. Doesn’t appear to be a kink, but she’s down for the count in terms of breeding. I wouldn’t want to risk further damage.
Dear everyone,
This is what an unhealthy snake looks like. There is no excuse. There is no excuse for your snake to not shed in one piece. There is no excuse for your snake to be chewed up. There is no excuse for your snake to be blind due to stuck eye caps. There is no excuse for lack of humidity or proper habitat set-up. There is no excuse for abuse.
If you really want to get a snake, or any animal, do your research. Research the animal for several months before finalizing whether or not you want it. If you’re too lazy to do your homework on a pet you want, you’re too lazy to deserve the responsibility of taking care of said pet.
Snakes can’t tell us that they’re too dry or if they’re thirsty. It’s our job to know.
This is a very important message to anyone who owns, knows someone who owns, or plans to own a snake. If it ever looks like this, something is horribly wrong. Snakes shed in one piece. They aren’t supposed to be missing scales, have scars, or have glossed over eyes and skin all the time.
Animal cruelty is serious and as the OP said, there is no excuse. Especially for problems as simple as there. All of this could have been prevented if: Snake had proper heating, humidity, and wasn’t left unsupervised with live rats.
I am happy to see that this long-suffering snake is now in proper and responsible care. Wish her the best.
